Captain and Coach
Imran Tahir will continue as the captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors. The experienced South African leg-spinner helped the team win its first CPL title in 2023. Tahir is an important player because he can take wickets and control the game during the middle overs. He is also good at making smart decisions and setting the field.
Lance Klusener is the head coach. The former South African all-rounder has been with the team during some of its most successful years. Klusener stays calm and helps players understand their roles. Romario Shepherd is also expected to support the team as an experienced local player.
Overseas Players
The GAW has five overseas players who bring international experience and different skills.
- Imran Tahir – A skilled leg-spinner and the team’s captain.
- Dwaine Pretorius – A useful pace bowler who can also score runs.
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz – A powerful opening batter and wicketkeeper.
- Mohammad Nabi – A skilled off-spinner who can also score important runs.
- Glenn Phillips – A powerful middle-order batter who can also bowl some spin.
These players give the Warriors many ways to win matches. They have strong spin bowling, pace bowling, powerful batting, and wicketkeeping options.
Local Players
The local players are an important part of the Guyana Amazon Warriors Squad for CPL 2026. Shimron Hetmyer is a dangerous batter who can score runs very quickly and change a match in just a few overs. Shai Hope brings calm and reliable batting. He can also help the team as a wicketkeeper. Romario Shepherd is a valuable all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball, especially during the final overs.
Shamar Joseph adds fast bowling power to the team. Khary Pierre and Veerasammy Permaul give the Warriors more spin bowling options. Matthew Nandu, Jonathan van Lange, and Ronaldo Alimohamed add more depth to the squad and compete for places in the playing XI.
The three Breakout Players — Quentin Sampson, Mavendra Dindyal, and Isai Thorne — bring young energy and give the Warriors a chance to develop future stars. Overall, the squad has a strong Guyanese identity while also including talented players from across the Caribbean.
Key Players to Watch
Several individuals stand out as potential difference-makers this season.
- Imran Tahir will set the tone with the ball and in the field.
- Shimron Hetmyer remains capable of explosive starts or middle-order acceleration.
- Romario Shepherd often delivers impactful spells and useful lower-order runs.
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz can dominate powerplays when he finds rhythm.
- Glenn Phillips offers consistent middle-order firepower and athletic fielding.
- Shamar Joseph’s pace can trouble batters on any surface.
- Mohammad Nabi provides control and experience in the middle overs.
Breakout players such as Isai Thorne and Quentin Sampson also deserve close attention. One of them will feature in every match and could force their way into more permanent roles with strong performances.
Probable Playing XI
Team selection will depend on conditions, opposition, and form. A likely balanced combination could look like this:
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk)
- Shimron Hetmyer
- Shai Hope
- Glenn Phillips
- Romario Shepherd
- Mohammad Nabi
- Dwaine Pretorius
- Shamar Joseph
- Imran Tahir (c)
- Khary Pierre or Veerasammy Permaul
- One breakout player (Isai Thorne, Quentin Sampson, or Mavendra Dindyal)
This XI offers batting depth down to number eight or nine, variety in spin, and genuine pace. Adjustments will occur for slower tracks or when extra pace is preferred.
Team Strengths
The GAW enters the season with several clear advantages. Their spin attack looks particularly strong with Tahir, Nabi, Pierre, and Permaul available. Batting firepower exists throughout the order thanks to Hetmyer, Hope, Phillips, Gurbaz, and Shepherd. Experience at the top of the leadership structure provides stability.
Home matches at Providence Stadium give them a familiar environment and passionate local support. The side has reached multiple finals in recent years and knows how to handle the pressure of knockout cricket. Depth in both batting and bowling allows the team to absorb injuries or poor form from one or two players.
Team Weaknesses
No squad is without areas of concern. The pace attack beyond Shamar Joseph and Dwaine Pretorius relies on emerging options or part-timers. Consistency from the top order will be vital, especially if early wickets fall. The need to include a breakout player in every match can occasionally limit flexibility if form is uneven.
Traveling across multiple venues and the expanded seven-team format will test squad depth over the full schedule. Managing workloads for senior players such as Tahir and Shepherd across a long tournament remains an ongoing challenge.
